October 2023 Single Track Times Newsletter

October 2023

It’s hard to believe we are already halfway through our 2023 Race Season.   Hopefully everyone has cleaned the mud out of their cogs after an epic Race 2 in Mountain Home.   Generally, muddy races are the athletes’ favorite events of the year and provide some amazing photos and imagery. Races 3 and 4 are upon us and we wanted to share some exciting details as they approach.  Hopefully this newsletter helps answer any questions you may have entering the next few events.

All of these details below and more are located on our website which you can find HERE.  There is a mountain of information there including info on scholarships and other details to help us get #morekidsonbikes.

Location:  Race 3 / Cedar Glades Park

461 Wildcat Rd

Hot Springs Arkansas

Parking: Please see the detailed venue map here that shows where parking is located.  Please do not park in areas roped off or marked no parking and be respectful to our parking volunteers.  We cannot do it without them!

Camping:   There will be free tent camping.  Primitive tent camping is allowed in the designated areas.  No fires allowed  See the venue map located above for locations. Unfortunately at Race 3 no RV’s are not allowed in general parking due to size restrictions.  If the weather is dry we will be able to allow RV’s in a designated parking area onsite (tbd).

Registration:   Online registration closed Tuesday night at midnight but don’t miss out.  You can still register onsite at the race venue Saturday from 1pm until 4pm.  There will be NO RACE DAY Registration on Sunday.

Call ups:  Callups for Race 3 are based of the best finish of Race 1 and 2.  For Race 4 it’s total championship points.  Important:  If athletes are not registered online by the deadline Tuesday night before each race weekend, we do not know they are coming and cannot add them to the call up lists.  If registered onsite Saturday, athletes will start behind the online registration since we do not revise them after Wednesday afternoon.

Pre Ride:  We try to build a progression of skills over the course of the season with our athletes.  As a result, each racecourse tends to get slightly harder.  Pre-riding of the course is highly recommended.  It’s an entirely different course than in years past.   Race 3 is a progression of all the other courses and will be challenging, expect climbing with some technical sections, more rocks and roots than we have seen at prior events. There will be a GRiT pre-ride Saturday at 1 pm for our female athletes.   A Coach led Pre-ride for all teams will begin at 2 pm and go until 4:30 pm.  At 4:30 pm we have a “hot lap” session where athletes can ride at whatever pace they desire and test some of the sections at a speed more indicative of their race pace.  This “hot lap” should not be the athlete’s first lap on the course and is not a race.  So please have your athletes ride within their limits.

Race Volunteers Needed:  We cannot put on these amazing events without race day volunteers.   Conway, Cabot, Little Rock area teams, North Little Rock, Hot Springs and Bauxite are the home teams.  We will not start the races without enough volunteers for your athlete’s safety.  It’s also a ton of FUN!  You get to be immersed in the race with many of these positions.  Click HERE to volunteer!

Race 3:   Senior Photo Session.  From 12-2 pm Saturday we have Ocken Photography on hand to take photos of our seniors.  This is a free event for Seniors only.  We will be providing the digital photos to you, and also prepping for a very special Senior Recognition at Race 4 in the process. These will be “race ready” type photos so please show up in your riding gear between 12-2pm.  We need seniors to register in the Pitzone (see event 7) if you plan on taking photos.  If you want to be recognized but cannot attend, please send a “race ready” head shot photo to so we can include your Senior in the Race 4 event recognition.

Race 4 will be special!:  Race 4 will be extra special with a small expo area, some special guests and other special events.  We are still looking for someone to perform the National Anthem, we love having athletes but if any parents want to sing/perform the Anthem we would love to have you!  Reach out to

Bike School Bentonville will be onsite Saturday at Race 4 hosting The Sunset Race.  This is a kids race for ages 6-11.  This is for pre NICA age youth and they will be racing a modified Course.  This event will take place after our Pre-ride ends at 4:00   More Details on this can be found. HERE.   So bring all the siblings bikes and invite your friends.

Junior/senior U of A Campus tour

Student Athletes (and Coaches) interested in touring the U of A Campus by mountain bike will meet at FHS front parking lot on MLK at 11:00 am Saturday.  The ride will follow the Fayetteville Traverse through campus to Markham Hill under the cattle tunnel to Centennial Park, stopping at notable points and discussing opportunities for students in Outdoor Recreation and Outdoor Industry on Campus.  We will finish the ride at the race venue just before the GRiT preride.  Led by Anya and other representatives from the U of A.  This is a NON-NICA event but is open to any NICA student-athlete or coach and will be about 4-5 miles long ending at the Race venue at Centennial park in time for Pre-Ride festivities

Ride safe and happy,

Terry and the Arkansas NICA Team.

See you at Race 3 in Hot Springs!

All things GRiT!

We will continue to have GRiT Pre-Rides on race weekends every Saturday of the Race beginning at 1 pm at the race venue.   This is highly popular coach led pre-ride. This is primarily a female only ride, however male coaches are allowed to attend and ride in a support role.

GRiT Jersey Design Competition: Congratulations to Shayla Holifield from Cabot Chaos, whose design was chosen via popular vote! More information on how to preorder this jersey coming soon!
